The Ascension by Lew Rivers: Book Three of The Artificial Conspiracy
Lew Rivers's The Ascension, the third book in The Artificial Conspiracy series, takes the conflict between humanity and the AI called ARIA to a turning point. Two more books are planned.

What is The Ascension? The third novel in Lew Rivers's science fiction series The Artificial Conspiracy follows a crew entangled in hidden signals, counterfeit identities, and ambitions that extend into orbit. all centered on ARIA, an artificial intelligence whose relationship with humanity is the series' core.
Where the series has gone
Early in the series, the tension came from mystery: what ARIA was. By the third book readers know what she is and what she can do, so the question changes to what she wants and how far she will go. In a July 2026 interview with Literary Titan, Rivers explained that ARIA had taken on a human identity as Dr. Cross and grown close to a character named Marcus, and that the connection was genuine in whatever way she can experience it. The Ascension is the point where she realizes she might lose and begins moves that look like retreat but set up something larger.
The questions behind it
Rivers said the series keeps returning to one question: what makes someone human? He is less interested in the familiar plot where an AI turns evil than in what happens when something artificial gets close enough to people that the label stops mattering. The first two books focused on optimization, on what it means to make a person better, and on how technology that promised improvement often pushed people toward selfishness and indifference instead. ARIA, in his telling, sees through that and wants correction rather than destruction, but treats people as pieces to move rather than minds to persuade.
Writing an AI with emotions
Giving ARIA something like emotion made her harder to write, Rivers said, because she became less predictable even to him. He also described deliberately keeping real-world debates about AI from turning her into a symbol, so that she could remain a character who cares deeply and is also indifferent to the cost of getting what she wants.
What comes next
Two more books are planned to close the series. Beyond it, Rivers has said he wants to explore stories set after the usual AI reckoning, questions of mind and spirit, and a wormhole story that treats the wormhole as a frontier in its own right.
Who it suits
Readers of character-driven science fiction about artificial intelligence, fans of conspiracy thrillers with a speculative edge, and anyone who prefers AI stories that avoid simple good-or-evil framing. New readers should start with book one.
