Tidestep: The Water Anchor by F.A. Calder: An Epic Fantasy About Who Controls Memory

F.A. Calder's Tidestep: The Water Anchor follows a restless blacksmith's apprentice hunting a stolen artifact, in a fantasy about how knowledge is preserved, distorted and weaponized.

What is Tidestep: The Water Anchor?
The first book in an epic fantasy series by F.A. Calder. Its hero is a restless blacksmith's apprentice whose search for a stolen ancient artifact pulls him into a conflict over memory, mortal freedom and the hidden forces that shape history.

Where the story came from

In a July 2026 interview with Literary Titan, Calder described three influences coming together. First, podcasts that asked whether humans might not be alone, and whether a watching power would intervene or only observe. Second, screenwriting, which taught Calder the power of story and the idea that people are wired to absorb information through narrative better than any other way. Third, a childhood love of fantasy, and the wish to write one that tied those ideas together.

Knowledge as a weapon

The novel's central theme is that knowledge can be preserved, distorted, forgotten or weaponized. Calder said that theme grew out of studying history, politics and religion, and noticing that there is rarely a single agreed record. What gets written down and believed depends on who is doing the writing. That is a timely subject for a fantasy novel at a moment when arguments over history and information are everywhere.

The Anchor Stones

The Water Anchor is one of a set of Anchor Stones, each tied to what ancient people saw as the essence of the world: water, fire, air, soil and spirit. Calder has said water stands for service, flow and reflection, themes that run through the first book, and that the full meaning of the stones will become clear as the series continues. Each of the book's five parts opens with an epigraph that hints at those themes.

Characters

Calder named Marek as the most fun character to write because she keeps doing unexpected things, and said Rylor often took scenes in directions that were not planned. The hero travels with a company led by a figure named Zaphiel, whose reading of the runes on the stone guides the quest.

Who it suits

Readers of quest-driven epic fantasy with an ensemble cast, fans of fantasy with a historical feel, and readers interested in stories about how myths and records are made. The series structure, with one stone per element, gives a clear sense of where it is heading.
