Spotify for Authors Lets Indies Give Away 1,000 Free Audiobook Codes per Title
Self-published authors can generate up to 1,000 single-use codes per audiobook in Spotify for Authors. Codes earn no royalties. Here's how they work and the catches.
How many free copies of your audiobook can you give away on Spotify? Up to 1,000 per title. Spotify's support page on redemption codes says authors in Spotify for Authors can generate that many codes for each audiobook, and each code unlocks one free copy for one listener.
That's a large allowance. Most indie authors will never hand out a thousand review copies of a single book, so the cap is unlikely to be the thing that limits a launch.
How the codes work
If your audiobook is self-published, you can make the codes yourself. Sign in to Spotify for Authors, pick the book from your Catalog, open Redemption codes, type how many you want and click Generate. Spotify for Authors also shows which codes have been redeemed, so you can tell whether reviewers actually used theirs.
There are a few limits worth knowing before you plan a giveaway:
- No royalties. You don't earn anything on a copy claimed with a code.
- One use per code. Once a listener redeems a code, it's spent.
- Publisher titles are different. If a publisher released the audiobook, the publisher generates the codes and decides whether the author can too.
- The book has to be on Spotify. The support page says codes can only be made for audiobooks that are available there.
- Territory rules still apply. Listeners can redeem codes in 22 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Germany, France and the Nordic countries, but only where the book has the rights to be sold.
Listeners claim their copy at authors-direct.com/spotify while signed in to their Spotify account. Spotify also suggests they turn off pop-up blockers first, which is worth adding to any instructions you send out.
Using them for a launch
Spotify laid out its suggested uses in a September 2 post on the Spotify for Authors blog. The main one is advance copies: getting the audio to bloggers, Bookstagrammers and other reviewers in your genre weeks before release so their reviews and posts are ready on launch day. The post also mentions newsletter and social giveaways, free listens to thank new newsletter subscribers, and sets of codes for book clubs.
There's one point to check before you build a pre-launch plan around this. The blog post says the codes unlock a book on Spotify before release day. The support page says codes are only available for audiobooks that are already on Spotify. Those can both be true if a book with a countdown page counts as available, but if you're planning advance copies, generate a test code early and redeem it yourself to make sure it works.
Why it matters
Free codes are one of the cheapest ways to get early reviews and word of mouth for an audiobook. Because codes earn no royalties, you can't use them to boost earnings, but they can get the book in front of the people whose reviews will help it sell.
For authors who publish audio wide, it's one more reason to make sure the book is live on Spotify, not only on Audible. We wrote earlier about Spotify opening free digital narration to indie authors, which is another route to getting a title there.
