Sarah J. Maas's A Court of Splintered Harmony Sells 1.7 Million Copies on Release Day, Bloomsbury Says
Bloomsbury's figure counts preorders plus first-day English-language print and ebook sales in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia. Audiobooks and translations are excluded.
Sarah J. Maas's A Court of Splintered Harmony, the sixth novel in her A Court of Thorns and Roses series, sold 1.7 million copies on its October 27 release day, according to figures from her publisher, Bloomsbury, reported by Variety on October 30. Variety said the total is a release-day record for the author.
What the 1.7 million covers
The number is not a count of single-day retail sales alone. According to Bloomsbury, as reported by Variety, it combines preorders with first-day sales of English-language print and ebook editions at major retailers and independent bookshops in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. Audiobook sales and translated editions are excluded.
Variety reported that the result is up 600% on release-day sales of A Court of Silver Flames, the fifth book in the series, which came out in 2021. It also said the new title is on track to be the largest book release of the year. Kirkus Reviews also reported the figure and noted that it leaves out audiobooks and translations.
When PT checked on October 31, Bloomsbury had not issued a separate press release with the number.
The author's response
In a statement to Variety, Maas said that when she writes, she is "only thinking about the characters and the stories I want to tell." Seeing "the way readers have shown up for this one really blows my mind," she said, adding that she is "just beyond grateful."
Her team confirmed to Variety that Maas has now sold more than 100 million books worldwide across three series: A Court of Thorns and Roses, Throne of Glass and Crescent City.
A large launch, with gaps
Variety described a large marketing campaign ahead of publication. Dozens of brands released official merchandise made in collaboration with Maas over recent months, and around 2,000 midnight release parties were held around the world on October 27.
Supply did not reach every outlet at the same time. In New Zealand, independent bookshops did not have the book on release day while chain stores did, and booksellers wrote an open letter to the companies that distribute it, as PT reported on October 29.
What comes next
The next installment, A Court of Forgotten Melody, is due on January 12, according to Variety. The two new books make up "The Valkyrie Cycle: Movement I" and "The Valkyrie Cycle: Movements II and III," and an untitled third novel will conclude the four-part Valkyrie Cycle story, Variety reported.
On screen, a television adaptation of the series was developed at Disney's 20th Television and Hulu from 2021, with Ronald D. Moore as showrunner. Variety reported that the project was dropped in February 2025 over creative differences and that the rights have since reverted to Maas.
