PublishDrive Took Its Platform Offline for Hours Over PHP Security Flaws
The distributor limited access on October 21 as a precaution, applied the official PHP fix within a few hours and says monitoring found no sign of compromise.
PublishDrive, the ebook, print and audiobook distribution platform, took its service offline for part of October 21 as a precaution against what it called "the critical PHP security vulnerabilities being reported globally." The company said in a post on its LinkedIn page the next day that it had installed the fix, restored access within a few hours and found no sign that the platform had been compromised.
What PublishDrive said
The October 22 post is short. "Yesterday, we temporarily limited access to PublishDrive as a precaution in response to the critical PHP security vulnerabilities being reported globally," it reads. "The official PHP security fix was successfully implemented, and PublishDrive was back online within a few hours."
The company added that it had been "closely monitoring the platform for the past 24 hours and have detected no issues or indications of compromise," and that it would keep watching. "We acted quickly because protecting our customers, their data, and their businesses comes first," the post said.
PublishDrive did not say how many users were affected by the outage or exactly how long it lasted beyond "a few hours." It also did not name the specific vulnerabilities. PHP is a widely used programming language for running websites, and the post presents the problem as an industry-wide one rather than something specific to PublishDrive.
What it means for authors
A distribution account holds an author's book files, metadata, prices, sales reports and the bank details royalties are paid into. A precautionary shutdown costs a few hours of access. A breach would cost far more, so the line that matters most in the post is the one saying no compromise was found.
The LinkedIn post does not ask users to take any action, such as resetting passwords or checking payment details. Anyone who saw unexpected changes to titles, prices or payout settings around October 21 should raise it with PublishDrive support directly.
What PublishDrive does
PublishDrive distributes books to retailers, subscription services and library platforms. Its help center says that authors whose ebooks are in Amazon's KDP Select can still use it to reach libraries, because it lets them choose library channels only. That has made it one of the routes authors have used since Amazon began allowing KDP Select ebooks in public libraries.
