Little, Brown Names Michael Goldsmith to Lead Publicity

Hachette has hired Michael Goldsmith as Little, Brown's vice president and executive director of publicity, a new role, effective October 13.

Who is directing publicity at Little, Brown? Michael Goldsmith. Hachette Book Group has hired him as vice president and executive director of publicity at Little, Brown and Company, effective October 13, Publishers Weekly reported from an announcement by Little, Brown president and publisher Sally Kim.

What the job is

The position is new at Little, Brown. Goldsmith will oversee and direct publicity efforts and strategy for all imprints across the Little, Brown division. He reports to Kim. He will work alongside senior director of publicity Elizabeth Garriga. Publishers Weekly's account of the announcement describes that pairing and does not describe Garriga leaving the senior director role.

Where he has worked

Publishers Weekly describes Goldsmith as the former senior director of publicity for Doubleday and Pantheon. He had been with Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group since 2014, most recently as vice president and senior director of publicity for Doubleday and Pantheon.

In that job, Publishers Weekly reports, he led publicity campaigns for titles including Percival Everett's James, Patrick Radden Keefe's London Falling, and Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad and The Nickel Boys. He supported campaigns for authors including Stacey Abrams, Oyinkan Braithwaite, Bonnie Garmus, Jonathan Lethem, and Walter Mosley.

Before Knopf Doubleday, he held publicity roles at the Overlook Press and at HarperCollins Children's Books.

What Sally Kim said

Kim wrote in the announcement that Goldsmith's experience "will serve us tremendously well as we continue to expand and grow LB's list and publish with greater impact and commerciality."

Publishers Weekly's account of the announcement separates the campaigns he led from the campaigns he supported. The led list is four books: James, London Falling, The Underground Railroad, and The Nickel Boys. The supported list is five writers: Stacey Abrams, Oyinkan Braithwaite, Bonnie Garmus, Jonathan Lethem, and Walter Mosley. Those are the credits attached to the hire.

Why it matters for authors

Publicity is the desk that takes a finished book to media, bookstores, and events. For authors on Little, Brown imprints, the person directing that strategy across the division changes on October 13. The announcement, as Publishers Weekly reports it, puts Goldsmith over publicity efforts for every imprint in the division, reporting to the president and publisher, and working alongside the senior director already in the department. Authors outside Little, Brown can read the hire for the campaigns Kim's announcement is pointing at: Everett, Whitehead, Keefe, and the other writers named above.
