Kobo Plus Audiobooks Launch for Subscribers in France
Kobo Plus in France adds audiobooks alongside ebooks, with Read at €9.99 and Read & Listen at €14.99, and a 14-day free trial for new subscribers.

What's new for Kobo audiobooks in France? Kobo Writing Life says Kobo Plus audiobooks are now available to subscribers in France, so authors who distribute audio through KWL can reach French subscription listeners as well as ebook readers. The company posted the update for authors on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
Kobo Plus launched in France in 2021 as an ebook-only subscription. From today, French subscribers can also listen to audiobooks. Kobo says the catalogue now includes more than 2 million ebooks and more than 500,000 audiobooks.
The two French plans
French readers can pick between two monthly plans:
- Kobo Plus Read at €9.99 a month for unlimited ebooks
- Kobo Plus Read & Listen at €14.99 a month for unlimited ebooks and audiobooks
New subscribers get a 14-day free trial on either plan, with no commitment. Kobo Plus runs in the Kobo Books app on iOS and Android, and on Kobo eReaders.
What authors need to do
If your audiobooks are already opted in to Kobo Plus for all current and future territories, Kobo says you do not need to take any action. Those titles should already be available to French listeners.
If you have not opted in yet, this is a useful moment to check your KWL dashboard. Kobo reminds authors that they can bulk opt-in titles to Kobo Plus. Audiobooks are a fast-growing way for readers to try new authors, and a subscription that includes audio lowers the risk for listeners who want to sample a series before buying a la carte.
Why France matters on Kobo
France has been an ebook-only Kobo Plus market for five years. Adding audio turns that catalogue into a read-and-listen offer at a price that sits between many single-audiobook list prices and a full Audible-style membership. For indie authors who already publish wide through KWL, France is no longer ebook-only on the Plus tier.
Kobo frames the launch as a way to get stories "into the hands (and ears) of as many readers as possible," and points authors to its existing Kobo Plus help resources for opt-in steps and reporting.
Subscription audio keeps spreading
France joins other Kobo Plus markets where audio and ebook share one membership. For authors, that pattern matters more than any single launch day. Once a territory moves from ebook-only Plus to Read & Listen, narrated editions stop being an afterthought and become part of the default browse path for subscribers who already pay monthly.
Kobo's author note is short on marketing tactics and long on logistics: confirm opt-in, use bulk tools if needed, and lean on the existing Plus help pages. That is the right order. A French listener cannot find your audiobook on Plus if the title is still opted out of the territory, no matter how good the cover or sample is.
Series authors should also think about listening order. If book one is on Plus and book two is not, a subscriber who finishes the opener may bounce instead of converting. Align the first two or three books in a series before you treat France as "done."
Why it matters for authors
Check your Plus territory settings. Authors who opted in only to selected countries may still need to add France, or switch to all-and-future territories, before the French Read & Listen catalogue carries their audio.
Audio and ebook can feed each other. A listener who finishes book one on Plus may buy later volumes, paperbacks or gifts. PT's coverage of Spotify's audiobook expansion and ACX Amazon ads and preorders shows how crowded the subscription audio market is becoming.
Wide distribution still needs a plan. Putting audio on Kobo does not replace Audible, Apple or library platforms. It adds another subscription shelf in a major European language market. Review your narrated titles, series order and French-language rights before you assume every file should go live there.
