He Who Fights With Monsters: Outworlder Gets a 2026 Reissue From Penguin
Shirtaloon's web-serial hit He Who Fights With Monsters, Book 1: Outworlder, returned in 2026 as a deluxe hardcover in the US and a Michael Joseph edition in the UK and Commonwealth.

What is He Who Fights With Monsters?
Shirtaloon, the pen name of Australian author Travis Deverell, launched He Who Fights With Monsters as a free online serial. The series has since become a major force in LitRPG and progression fantasy, one of the biggest successes to come out of web fiction. Its first installment, Outworlder, introduces Jason Asano, an ordinary man transported to a world of magic, monsters and adventurer guilds where power is measured and earned much like levels in a game.
The 2026 editions
The series’ debut volume returned to shelves in new formats tailored for bookstores:
- US deluxe hardcover: Released July 7, 2026, this 768-page edition with a bonus short story and special cover features, through Simon & Schuster's distribution (listing).
- UK and Commonwealth: Penguin's Michael Joseph imprint published a hardback on August 4, 2026 (Penguin UK). In New Zealand, with a 768-page trade paperback in New Zealand from July (Penguin NZ).
Why a traditional reissue matters
LitRPG and progression fantasy have long thrived on web serial platforms, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible, where audio editions turned several series into bestsellers with little presence in physical bookstores. A Big Five imprint putting a deluxe edition of a web-serial book on shelves signals that publishers now see the genre as a print category with collector appeal, not only a digital niche. Across fantasy, Special editions with extra content have also become a major sales driver across fantasy, encouraging fans who already own the story digitally to buy it again.
What it means for indie and serial authors
Deverell's path, from free serial to self-published ebooks and audio to a major publisher deal, is the route many web fiction authors hope to follow. A few practical takeaways stand out:
- Build the audience first. A large, loyal readership gave publishers proof of demand.
- Keep rights in mind. Authors who control their print rights can license them later on better terms.
- Bonus content sells. Extra stories and special design give existing fans a reason to buy again.
Who it suits
Readers of portal fantasy and game-like magic systems, fans of long series with big casts and humor, and existing readers who want a shelf edition. At 768 pages, the first volume is a commitment.
