Hachette UK Acquires Children's Publisher Otter-Barry Books
Hachette UK has bought Otter-Barry Books, the ten-year-old independent publisher of diverse picture books and children's poetry. Its list moves to Hachette Children's Group.

What happens when a small, award-winning children's list joins a Big Five house? Its authors are about to find out. On October 8, 2026, Hachette UK announced that it has acquired Otter-Barry Books, an independent publisher of illustrated stories, picture books, gift books, nonfiction and poetry for children.
According to Hachette UK, the sale follows a definitive agreement signed on October 1, 2026. Hachette UK did not disclose a price.
What changes
Hachette UK says Otter-Barry's backlist and contracted frontlist will transfer to the catalogue of Hachette Children's Group (HCG), led by Managing Director Ruth Alltimes. The company says the list will benefit from "Hachette's global distribution, marketing capabilities, and technological infrastructure."
About Otter-Barry Books
Janetta Otter-Barry founded the publisher in 2015. Hachette UK describes it as a "celebrated publisher of culturally diverse, inclusive illustrated stories" and names some of its best-known titles:
- The Boy Lost in the Maze by Joseph Coelho, illustrated by Kate Milner
- The Final Year by Matt Goodfellow, illustrated by Joe Todd-Stanton
- The Jackie Morris Book of Classic Nursery Rhymes and Something About a Bear by Jackie Morris
- The Perfect Present and Blue Monster by Petr Horáček
"It has been the privilege of my life to found and lead Otter-Barry Books for the last ten years," Janetta Otter-Barry said. "But now it's time to hand over the baton." She added: "I feel that in Hachette we have found the best possible home for the Otter-Barry list."
What Hachette says
"We are honoured and excited to welcome Otter-Barry's talented community of authors and illustrators to Hachette UK," said David Shelley, CEO of Hachette UK. He said the list's "commitment to publishing books that make a difference, push boundaries, and that children will love aligns perfectly with our Raising Readers mission."
"We have long been fans of Janetta's work and great admirers of Otter-Barry's wonderful list," said Ruth Alltimes. "It has been our honour to have worked with some of the same authors and illustrators, and we are thrilled to welcome their impressive stable of creatives to Hachette Children's Group."
Part of a pattern
Hachette UK says the deal fits a longer-term strategy "to diversify into specialist areas by acquiring publishers," and lists earlier purchases: Welbeck, Paperblanks, Bookouture, Jessica Kingsley Publishers, Laurence King, Summersdale, Short Books and, most recently, Kogan Page.
What the announcement does not say
Hachette UK's release does not give a price. It does not say whether Otter-Barry Books will continue as a separate imprint name inside Hachette Children's Group, or what happens to the publisher's staff. Janetta Otter-Barry's own statement says it is "time to hand over the baton," which suggests she is stepping back from running the list. Authors and agents with questions about schedules and imprint branding should expect answers from HCG rather than from the release.
Why it matters for authors
Your contract usually moves with the list. Hachette UK says contracted frontlist titles transfer to HCG. If you are an Otter-Barry author or illustrator, read your agreement for assignment terms, check who your new editor and royalty contact are, and confirm your publication dates.
Bigger distribution, more competition for attention. A large house can put books into more shops and markets. But a small list inside a big group competes with many more titles for marketing time. Ask early what the launch plan looks like for your book.
Small presses are acquisition targets. Counting Otter-Barry, Hachette UK's announcement names nine specialist publishers it has bought. If you publish with an independent press, ask what happens to your rights and royalties if the company is sold. Some contracts address this directly; many do not.
