Jonathan Kieran's The Wednesday Box: An Illustrated Dark Fable for Adults
Jonathan Kieran's The Wednesday Box, an IndieReader Approved dark fable, follows a neglected young bookworm named May into a supernatural world. Kieran illustrated it himself with 45 full-color pieces.

What is The Wednesday Box? A dark fable written for adult readers by Jonathan Kieran, an independent author and illustrator who lives in the Big Sur highlands of California. The book received a rating above four stars and the IndieReader Approved seal, and in July 2026 IndieReader ran a Q&A interview with Kieran in its "An Open Book" series. This overview draws on that interview and puts it in context.
The story
The heroine is May, a lonely, unusually wise child who loves books and is largely ignored by the adults around her. Children like her, the story suggests, are exactly the ones an ancient evil looks for. May is drawn into a parallel realm where a terrifying being wants to enslave her, and she survives with the help of unexpected magical allies. To get home she must balance the grown-up toughness that neglect forced on her with the innocence that lets her still choose kindness.
Kieran describes the book as a parable about loneliness, the loss of a parent, being misunderstood, and resilience, and says he does not see it as only for fantasy fans.
An illustrated novel
One feature sets the book apart in a crowded market: Kieran drew and painted all 45 full-color illustrations by hand. He has done this before. His earlier fantasy series, The Enchanted Heritage Chronicles, launched in 2013 with heavy illustration, and he followed it in 2020 with Wistwood, a psychological and supernatural thriller that he says Kirkus Reviews praised and featured in its print magazine. The book came out in April 2020, days into the pandemic lockdowns, and the timing buried its launch.
Lessons for indie authors
Kieran's interview is candid about the business side. His advice boils down to a few points that apply widely:
- Pay for professional help. He credits a dedicated marketing and design collaborator and urges authors to hire skilled editors and designers.
- Be wary of offers that look too good. Research every service before paying for it.
- Ignore bad-faith reviews. Focus on readers who engage with the work.
- Protect the voice. Kieran stops reading fiction while he drafts, so other writers' styles do not seep into his own.
His story about Wistwood is also a reminder that launch timing can matter as much as reviews, and that a book can be relaunched later.
Who it suits
Adult readers of dark fairy tales in the vein of Neil Gaiman, fans of illustrated fiction, and anyone drawn to stories about neglected children finding their power. Kieran told IndieReader he was rereading Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, which gives a sense of the tradition he admires.
