Tapas Stops Selling Ink and Will Close on March 31, 2027
Tapas says readers can no longer buy or earn Ink as of October 1. The platform, and access to episodes already unlocked, ends March 31, 2027 at 23:59 Pacific.

What happens to a story when the app that sold it shuts down? On October 1, 2026, Tapas posted an end-of-service notice. After more than a decade, the company said, the decision to wind down the Tapas platform has been made. Readers can no longer acquire Ink starting October 1, 2026. They can use any Ink they still hold until March 31, 2027. That date is the end of service.
The notice calls the change significant for the readers, creators, and partners who have been part of Tapas. It thanks creators "who trusted us with their stories" and readers who supported those stories. The dates and the rules for what survives sit in a companion FAQ, posted September 30 and last updated October 1. The FAQ says it may not answer every question yet, and that Tapas will keep updating it.
The dates
The FAQ lists four deadlines, all at 23:59 Pacific Time on March 31, 2027:
- The last day to use Ink.
- The last day to unlock episodes.
- The last day to access content.
- The end of the Tapas service.
Until that hour, a reader who already holds Ink can still spend it. After that hour, the FAQ says, the reader will no longer be able to access Tapas or use any Ink that is left.
Ink, refunds, and what readers keep
Ink is the balance readers spend to unlock episodes and to support creators. The FAQ says readers can keep using remaining Ink to unlock episodes until the end of service on March 31, 2027. The ability to acquire additional Ink, including free Ink, is no longer available starting October 1, 2026. The notice's wording is "users can no longer acquire Ink." The FAQ adds that this includes free Ink through the app.
There are currently no plans to hold additional sales or events before the end of service. Content prices will remain unchanged.
Purchases do not move. The FAQ says content unlocked on Tapas cannot be transferred to another Kakao service or platform. The examples it names are Kakao Page and Kakao Webtoon. Asked whether a reader can get a refund for Ink or for content already unlocked, the FAQ points to Tapas's refund policy: all Ink transactions are final and non-refundable.
Access ends with the service. After March 31, 2027, a reader will no longer be able to access Tapas, including any previously unlocked content. A reader who wants a copy of account and personal data is told to write to feedback@tapas.io.
What creators can still do
The FAQ has a section written for Tapas creators, and it points creator questions to the Tapas Creator Inquiry Form.
A title stays up through the end of service on March 31, 2027, unless it is removed earlier. Readers can still unlock episodes of that title with Ink they already hold, through the same end date. Readers can also keep supporting creators through the Support Program, again using remaining Ink, through March 31, 2027.
Creators may continue to publish new material on Tapas. The FAQ says there are currently no immediate plans to restrict the ability to publish new content. If that changes, Tapas says it will update the FAQ.
A creator who wants a title taken down before the end of service is told to submit that request through the Tapas Creator Inquiry Form. Questions about whether exclusivity clauses still apply are not answered with a blanket yes or no. The FAQ says those questions will be reviewed based on the applicable agreement, and that the creator should send the inquiry through the same form so it can be directed to the appropriate team.
If a creator's question is not covered by the form, the FAQ gives the address help@tapasent.com. Readers are directed to feedback@tapas.io.
Why it matters for authors
The calendar is the story. As of October 1, new Ink is not coming in, including free Ink through the app. The audience that can still pay to unlock an episode, or to use the Support Program, is the audience that already holds a balance. That balance can be spent until 23:59 Pacific Time on March 31, 2027. After that, the FAQ says the platform, the unlocked episodes, and any unused Ink are no longer available, and unlocked content cannot be moved to Kakao Page, Kakao Webtoon, or another Kakao service.
Creators are not told to stop publishing. The FAQ says new material can still go up, titles remain available unless removed earlier, and a takedown is a request through the creator form. Exclusivity is left to the individual agreement. Anyone with a Tapas contract that limits where a series can appear has to ask, through that form, whether the clause still binds them while the service winds down. The notice and the FAQ are the company's own account of the shutdown. They do not name a buyer, a migration path, or a refund exception.
