Amazon Introduces a Completely Redesigned Kindle Family
Amazon's redesigned Kindle, Paperwhite, and Colorsoft are thinner and lighter, with edge-to-edge color. The 6-inch Kindle starts at $149.99.

What did Amazon change about Kindle? The whole family. On October 1, 2026, Kevin Keith, vice president of Devices, wrote on About Amazon that the company is introducing a completely redesigned lineup: an all-new Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Colorsoft. They are thinner and lighter, with a new display stack and seamless edge-to-edge color across the lineup.
The display and the colors
Keith says the team redesigned the devices from the ground up, beginning with a reverse-stack display construction that Amazon calls a first for the e-reader category. Every device now has a flush-front display. There is no raised border interrupting the reading surface, just an edge-to-edge page, and a thinner device. The color of each device wraps from front to back.
The lineup introduces Ube, which Amazon describes as a rich purple, plus Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green, and Graphite. It also brings Fig to e-readers for the first time. Keith writes that Kindle has seen double-digit growth globally for three consecutive years, with more than 720 billion pages read in 2025.
The 6-inch Kindle
The all-new 6-inch Kindle is, in Amazon's words, the most pocket-sized Kindle it has ever made. It has 16GB of storage, up to 6 weeks of battery life, and book opening that is 30% faster than the previous release. The housing is made from recycled materials, with a 100% recycled cobalt battery. It starts at $149.99, in Ube and Graphite.
That 6-inch Kindle is also available for the first time with an aluminum back: the same pocket-sized form and the same flush-front display, with what Amazon calls a premium feel. The housing is 80% recycled aluminum with a matte finish. This version has 32GB and costs $189.99, in Alpine Sky Aluminum and Seaglass Green Aluminum.
Paperwhite
The new Paperwhite is thinner and lighter than the previous lineup. It is waterproof, it has an adjustable warm light, and Amazon says battery life is up to 12 weeks on a single charge. The display uses an oxide thin-film transistor backplane. Amazon calls it the largest Paperwhite display, with the highest contrast ratio.
The Signature Edition adds an aluminum rear, 32GB of storage, an auto-adjusting front light, pogo pin dock charging, and double tap to turn pages. Amazon says it remains thinner than the previous version.
The 16GB model, in Graphite, starts at $199.99. The Signature Edition, with 32GB, is $249.99 in Graphite and Seaglass Green.
Colorsoft
The new Colorsoft is built for paper-like color that Amazon says is easier on the eyes than the glare of a tablet. The uses Keith names are colorful covers in a library, a travel guide, a comic, or a graphic novel.
To get that color, the display includes a light-guide with nitride LEDs, meant to enhance color and increase brightness without washing out detail. It uses an oxide backplane with custom waveforms, which Amazon says is for fast performance and higher contrast on both color and black-and-white pages. This Colorsoft has a redesigned display that uses the reverse-printing technology Amazon says it applied across the lineup for edge-to-edge color. The light guide contains micro-deflectors that minimize stray light and improve uniformity, and an ultra-thin optical coating in the display stack that Amazon says improves clarity.
The Colorsoft Signature Edition adds aluminum housing, 32GB of storage, an auto-adjusting front light, double tap to turn pages, and pogo pin dock charging.
The 16GB model, in Graphite, starts at $289.99. The Signature Edition, with 32GB, is $319.99 in Graphite and Fig.
Kids editions
The new Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Colorsoft all come in Kids versions. The covers are designed by artists. Each includes 12 months of Amazon Kids+, which Amazon says gives access to thousands of books and audiobooks. Keith writes that when kids sit down with a Kindle, they read, on average, more than an hour a day, with no notifications, no apps, and no messaging. Kids devices start at $179.99.
Accessories
Amazon is selling a small set of accessories beside the new devices.
Kindle Click is $34.99, a compact Bluetooth remote for turning pages. It is compatible with all of the new Kindles and with any Kindle from 2024 or later.
The Page-Turn Cover is $79.99. It is magnetic, with physical page-turn buttons, and it uses pogo pin connectivity. Amazon says it keeps the slim form. It is available for the Paperwhite Signature Edition and the Colorsoft Signature Edition.
The Charging Dock is $59.99. It holds the Paperwhite Signature Edition and the Colorsoft Signature Edition upright and charged.
Covers start at $39.99, in knit fabric, plant-based leather, and pebbled premium leather. They wrap fully around the device and are color-matched across the lineup. For devices with aluminum housing, slim magnetic-attach covers are also available.
Where they go on sale
In the October 1 article, Amazon says the Kindle and its aluminum version are available starting that day in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Australia. Beginning the same day, Paperwhite and Colorsoft become available for preorder on a rolling basis in those same places.
The new Kids Kindle is available for purchase starting that day. Kids Colorsoft is available for preorder in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan. The article does not give a separate on-sale date for the Kids Paperwhite.
Why it matters for authors
The hardware readers use for Kindle books just refreshed. The 6-inch Kindle starts at $149.99, the aluminum version at $189.99, Paperwhite at $199.99, and Colorsoft at $289.99, with Signature editions above those prices. Kids versions start at $179.99 and include 12 months of Amazon Kids+. Authors selling on KDP should know what devices shoppers are being pointed toward this season. Colorsoft is the screen Amazon describes for colorful covers, comics, and graphic novels. Kindle Click works with the new lineup and with any Kindle from 2024 or later. The Page-Turn Cover and the Charging Dock are for the Paperwhite Signature and Colorsoft Signature editions. What changes for an author is the glass a cover and a series are read on.
